'Appy' Buncrana pupils in top
three
18.04.11
THREE Scoil Mhuire
students made the top three at the recent ‘National
Get Up and Go’ awards in Kildare.
Steve Sheridan, Henry Bowles and Robert McGilloway
took third place for a Smartphone App – ‘Mind Your
BAC’ – that allows users measure their blood alcohol
levels.
“It was great to take third place, considering that
27 different companies reached the national finals
after themselves getting through their regional
competition,” said Henry.
“The judges said that we had improved our stall and
our presentation from the regional finals and were
impressed with our business idea." |

Minister for Trade
Richard Bruton also complimented the boys on their
business idea – although Henry admitted he didn’t
know who the Minister was until someone told him
afterwards.
“We’re going to keep the business going and have
more Apps in the pipeline,” Henry added. “We’re
looking at developing a fitness App, or perhaps some
kind of game.”
While interested in computing, Henry doesn’t plan to
follow it as a career. Aeronautical engineering is
what attracts him, but he says App design is a nice
sideline to have and may prove to be a good way to
earn money.
Bowles praised his teacher, Katrina McGonagle, for
all her help, including accompanying the boys after
a 3am start for the trip to Kildare.
The App can be downloaded for free from
www.android.com and is suitable for smartphones
using the Android operating system. |
