Moville river "seriously polluted" 25.02.11

MOVILLE'S Bredagh River is "seriously polluted" due to discharges from the town's municipal waste treatment facility, a new report shows.
The report by the Environmental Protection Agency revealed that the Bredagh River was one of 20 seriously polluted rivers around the country.
The EPA said agriculture and municipal waste treatment facilities continued to be principal sources of water pollution.

Thousands of samples from hundreds of locations around the country including the Bredagh, were studied and analysed by the EPA for the three-year report.
The organisation said while agricultural pollution was still a problem, phosphate and nitrate pollution was down. Meanwhile, 90% of Irish lakes monitored are 'satisfactory'. Pollution of the Bredagh River has been a source of concern for local anglers and environmentalists as the debate continues about where to site a new sewage treatment facility for Moville-Greencastle.
Meanwhile, there were four other 'seriously polluted' rivers in Co Donegal according to the new EPA report, namely, Roosky at Mullinroe Bridge, Ballaghdoo at Meenychannon, Swilly Burn near Raphoe and Roechrow at Meenateia. The report revealed that Donegal's Fern Lake is one of 25 lakes across the country listed as of poor and bad ecological status. Donegal’s seawater passed the EPA water quality tests.
