A young Glengad girl is on cloud nine this week
after scooping a record number of titles at the
County Fleadh in Letterkenny on Saturday.
Going four better than last year’s haul of five,
Breda Doherty from Bunn, Malin, scooped an amazing
nine gold medals at the Donegal event
Proud parents, Bridget and Paddy, said they are
delighted with their ten-year-old’s success.
Building on her success of last year, the Glengad
girl’s gongs included winning the under 12’s tin
whistle, fiddle, piano and piano accordion
competitions. Alongside Gavin McDaid on the tin
whistle and Caitlin McDaid on the concertina, the
young Bunn girl also came out on top in the Duet and
Trio competitions.
However determined not to rest on her laurels, the
young musician is looking ahead to the next
competition in July.
“I’ll be playing in Dungiven in the Ulster Fleadh
and this will be the big one.
“I’ll be representing Donegal in nine competitions,
but this will be really tough as I’ll have a lot of
competition.” |

Hitting the high note: Breda Doherty
who scooped a whopping nine gold medals at the
Donegal County Fleadh. |
Despite defeating
hundreds of competitors in Letterkenny last weekend,
the Ballymena NS pupil admits she will be happy to
simply receive just one trophy in July.
“This will be so much harder, so if I win one
competition, I will be happy. I will be practising
every day from now until then in preparation.”
The youngest of six children in a musical family,
Breda follows in the footsteps of her sister Celine,
who is an accomplished accordion player.
The schoolgirl also paid tribute to her teachers
Roisin McGrory, Teresa McClure and Trish Lafferty.
However when she is not tuning up on the fiddle or
accordion Breda likes to listen to her favourite pop
artist, Beyonce. |
