A BRIDGE-widening programme to help pedestrians in
Clonmany has been given the green light by Donegal
County Council.
A road bridge crossing the Clonmany River in the
townlands of Straid and Gaddyduff will be widened to
accommodate a footbridge, which will safely allow
walkers to cross the river.
The ageing stone structure is extremely narrow and
poses a clear risk to anyone on foot, particularly
when two vehicles meet along the bridge.
The impending new footbridge has been warmly
welcomed by local Fine Gael councillor Bernard
McGuinness.
“A wider bridge will ensure the safety of people
walking in the area and that is of paramount
importance. This is an issue I have been working on
for a number of years and all the Inishowen
councillors are behind this vital project in
Clonmany,” he said.
“Works on the bridge will also bring a much-needed
boost to the local construction industry. I am
delighted that this enterprise has been given the go
ahead by Donegal County Council,” McGuinness added.
Also working behind the scenes on the issue, Cllr
Rena Donaghey said she was absolutely delighted.
“I am delighted that this project has come to
fruition. I have worked on this issue since the
early days. I would like to thank the local
developer, Martin McGonigle, who made a significant
contribution to the bridge through a development
charge,” she said. |
