Egg-citing day for would-be TDs 14.02.11

by Linda McGrory

ELECTION candidates could end up with egg on their faces later this week at an omelette-making challenge in Donegal North East.
The constituency's eleven would-be TDs have been invited to put their sunny-side-up for the charity event in Burt organised by community chef, Brian McDermott.
"I just want to add a light-hearted ingredient to the local election campaign," said Brian. "The candidates will be up against each other to produce an edible omelette in the quickest time." Scrambling for top spot, should they take up the challenge, will be Sinn Féin's Pádraig MacLochlainn, Fianna Fáil's Charlie McConalogue, Labour's Jimmy Harte as well as Fine Gael's Joe McHugh and John Ryan. And no doubt, there will be plenty of yolks cracked between the constituency's four Independent candidates, Ian McGarvey, Betty Holmes, Ryan Stewart, Dessie Shiels, MacDara Blaney and the Greens' Humphrey Murphy.
Competitors, supporters and spectators will be invited to make a small donation to the Donegal
Community chef, Brian McDermott.
Hospice on the day. Brian McDermott has cooked professionally for more than 17 years and is carving out a successful career as a local community chef. He imparts cookery skills, nutritional advice and grow-your-own tips to a wide variety of community groups, individuals and schools throughout the North West. He hopes his novel challenge will provide some humourous respite as polling day approaches.
"The omelette-making challenge will be a good chance for the local candidates to take a light-hearted break from the campaign trail and cook something healthy.
"It will also be a great way to showcase Donegal's local produce." Brian thanked the Grianan Hotel, Burt, for providing the venue free of charge. The event takes place at the hotel on Thursday, February 17, from 10.30am to 11.45am and everyone is welcome.
