Scores of collisions at Fahan corner 02.12.11

by Caoimhinn Barr, Inishowen Independent

An Inishowen county councillor has raised serious concerns about a stretch of road near Fahan village, which, he claims is fast becoming an accident black spot in the south of the peninsula.
Cllr. John Ryan said a bend, known locally as the ‘Lookout’, on the Buncrana side of the village has seen a large number of accidents in recent times.
“There have been an abnormal amount of car crashes at this corner. It was brought to my attention by a member of the fire service and I’ve also spoken to the Gardai to see what can be done on the issue,” he said.
“I know there is a new road marking programme going on in Fahan at the moment but maybe we need to look at putting a different surface, with more grip, at the ‘Lookout’ corner,” Cllr. Ryan added.
“Luckily enough there has been nothing serious in terms of accidents but there have been a lot of minor accidents at the corner and we need to find out why,” he said.
Fahan corner is fast becoming accident black spot.
Cllr. Ryan said he is at a loss when it comes to explaining why the area records many more traffic collisions than elsewhere.
“I travel the road regularly and can’t really understand what the problem is because there are bends everywhere – but this specific one seems to cause more problems than most.”
Donegal County Council Roads Engineer Charlie Kerr said he will liaise with the Gardai on the matter before taking a course of action.
Speaking at an Inishowen Electoral Area meeting in Carn on Tuesday, councillor Ryan said he is also seeking a new pedestrian crossing in Bridgend. He said he could see ‘no reason’ why one could not be installed near Doherty’s Café in the border village.
