McHugh welcomes Coveney's catch
19.12.11
DONEGAL TD Joe McHugh,
has welcomed "hugely significant" quota increases in
haddock, boarfish, plaice and megrum for the Irish
fishing sector.
He said the deal "will secure and create jobs" in
communities around the coast.
“For the past decade annual EU Fish Quota
negotiations represented a yearly disappointment for
Irish fishermen. The quota increases secured by
Minister Coveney this weekend provide scope for
major growth in the marine sector, and give hope to
Ireland’s coastal community, which has been hammered
in recent years," said the Fine Gael deputy. |

“Irish fishermen’s
mature and responsible approach to sustainability,
together with first-class scientific argument
prepared by the Marine Institute, created space for
Minister Coveney to stand up for Ireland’s marine
industry in Europe this week. "Responsible
representation from the fishing industry and
meaningful scientific analysis were key tools for
Minister Coveney in the negotiations."
Deputy McHugh added: “By-catch rule changes in Irish
haddock fisheries are a very significant boost for
our small-to-medium boat sector.
"At the negotiations, Minister Coveney secured
agreement that the European Parliament will have a
role in simplifying rules governing by-catch and
mesh-size in the polyvalent sector; it is vitally
important that Irish MEPs are proactive in leading
that debate in the European Parliament.” |
