A number of events are
being planned to mark the 20th anniversary of the
murder of Buncrana Sinn Féin councillor, Eddie
Fullerton. The popular 56-year old councillor was
shot dead in front of his wife, Diana, at their home
in Cockhill Park, Buncrana, in the early hours of
May 25, 1991. No-one has ever been charged with the
killing, believed to have been carried out by a gang
of loyalist gunmen who crossed the border into Co
Donegal to carry out the shooting. Anniversary
committee chairman, Daren Lalor, yesterday said the
main event would be the unveiling of an engraved
memorial stone and wreath-laying ceremony at
Buncrana's Stone Jug on Sunday, May 29 at 3pm. "The
memorial stone has been taken from the land around
the homestead where Eddie grew up at Sleadrin,
Buncrana," said Mr Lalor. Other anniversary events
will include a fishing competition involving some 13
boats at Fullerton Pollan Dam reservoir on Sunday,
May 22. The dam, at Illies, Buncrana, was named
after the late councillor who lobbied for its
construction during his 12 consecutive years on
Buncrana Urban District Council and Donegal County
Council. An inaugural Eddie Fullerton Perpetual
Trophy will be presented to the winning angling team
on the day. A large gathering of Sinn Féin public
representatives and supporters from throughout the
North West will join Eddie Fullerton's family for
the main anniversary event on May 29. A reception
with refreshments will be held afterwards in the
Harbour Inn, Ludden, to which everyone is invited. |
