GARDAI have warned Inishowen drivers not to leave valuables in their cars following a spate of smash and grab incidents in the peninsula.
Brazen thieves broke into several cars at Greencastle Golf Club while golfers celebrated an end of season party. The incident happened sometime between 12 midnight and 12.30am on Saturday. One staff member got a shock to discover his Toyota car jacked up and its four silver alloy wheels missing. The value of the missing wheels was €600, while a rear window was also smashed.
The car belonging to a bar man at Greencastle Golf Club which was stripped of its expensive alloy wheels by brazen thieves last weekend.
Elsewhere in the car park, two other vehicles were targeted. The driver's window in one was smashed but nothing was taken. A hold-call containing golf items valued at €250 was taken from another.
Twenty-four hours earlier, two cars were targeted in the Muff area. A saloon car was broken into in the early hours of Friday at Ard Ban and £110 in cash was stolen. The thieves smashed one of the car's windows to gain entry, causing further damage of €120. On the same night, a second car was broken into at Ardmore Manor sometime between 2.45am and 3.05am. Nothing was taken. A Garda spokesperson said it was possible the Muff and Greencastle crimes were linked. "We would ask people not to leave valuables in the cars," said the spokesperson.
The latest attacks follow a number of similar incidents where tourists' cars were broken into at Grianan of Aileach ringfort. Anyone with information is asked to contact Gardai on 93 20540.
