THE DONEGAL Road Safety
Working Group is asking people to support its new
campaign ‘Be Safe Be Seen’ by wearing bright
coloured or hi-viz clothing when walking or cycling
this winter. And free reflective armbands are being
made available to the Donegal public as part of the
campaign.
More than two-thirds of fatal pedestrian accidents
happen during the hours of darkness. Although
pedestrians can hear a car coming and see its
lights, the driver may not see the pedestrian and
certainly won’t hear them.
Mayor Noel McBride said: “With darker mornings and
evenings there is an increased risk to all road
users. Wearing a hi-viz vest or an armband is a
simple way of increasing your visibility.” |

Donegal County
Council’s Road Safety Officer Eamonn Brown urged
drivers to check that their headlights are working.
”Having a headlight out is dangerous in two ways:
not only can the driver of the vehicle not see
properly on an unlit road with only half the usual
light available, but the defective headlight means
that other road users will have difficulty spotting
the vehicle properly or in some cases mistaking it
for a motorbike – a major danger when overtaking,"
said Mr Brown. The campaign also includes pedal
cyclists and motorcyclists who are asked to ensure
that other road users can see them at all times.
Meanwhile, Donegal County Council and An Gardaí
Síochána have teamed up to provide the public with
free reflective armbands. They are available at all
Public Service Centres and Garda stations around the
county. |
