Big day for Junior Cert graduates

SOME 400 Inishowen
students collected their Junior Certificate results
yesterday with local school principals happy overall
with the Class of 2011.
The results were the first big milestone for the
young pupils in their educational careers. Moville
Community College had 92 students sitting the Junior
Cert this year. |

Principal Anthony
Doogan yesterday said he was "very happy" with the
results.
"Overall, I'm very, very happy with the results.
There were some outstanding achievements and plenty
of students who absolutely maximised their own
abilities. They've shown that the hard work has paid
off and that they can now move on and do their
Leaving Certificate in comfort," said Mr Doogan. He
said the Foyleside school was celebrating a 97% pass
rate in Maths.
Students were also celebrating at Carndonagh
Community School and Crana College and Scoil Mhuire
in Buncrana.
The Minister for Education, Ruairí Quinn TD,
yesterday paid tribute to the country's 56,930
Junior Certificate students.
"Today's results are the culmination of many hours
of hard work by all the students, their parents and
teachers and they all should be very proud of what
has been achieved," he said. He was pleased to see a
rise in the number of students taking higher level
science. A total of 2,500 more students nationally
took the paper compared to last year. |

"I would encourage all
of these students to continue studying science in
the senior cycle," he added.
Meanwhile, the North West Alcohol Forum (NWAF)
appealed to students across the county to "celebrate
with care" and not put themselves at risk of harm
from using alcohol or drugs to enhance their
celebrations.
NWAF director Eamon O’Kane said: “The Alcohol Forum
does not want to spoil the party but the notion of
partying with care simply recognises that there is
nothing attractive in being sick, lying in a pool of
vomit, being assaulted or waking up in the emergency
department.
“By partying with care, those Junior Cert students
who do gather with their friends to celebrate can be
assured of a fun night that will provide positive
memories and a much deserved break from their hard
work.” |
