Novel lifejacket catwalk in
Moville

TRANSITION Year
students at Moville Community College are urging
people to stay safe on the sea by telling them
"Don't slack it, wear a lifejacket'. |
The students who are
taking part in the 'Latitude' project, recently took
part in a number of activities to get their message
across including a simulated sea rescue session at
Greencastle Coast Guard, historical research at the
Greencastle Maritime Museum, and a presentation at
their school assembly. Earlier this week the
students also visited local primary schools to
deliver their message.

locally and nationally
to Coast Guard stations in the form of car window
stickers. The finale of the Latitude project was a
novel Lifejacket Catwalk on Moville Pier involving a
'fashion' parade of customised lifejackets..
"The Pier Catwalk was created in order to deliver a
serious message in a fun way, and the lifejackets
have been customised by the project participants in
order to highlight the activities of the Latitude
project, and to draw attention to the issue of sea
safety amongst the local and wider community," said
a spokesperson. |

The Latitude project
has been supported by Leargas Youth in Action
programme and is presented through the Moville and
District Family Resource Centre, with support from
Greencastle Coast Guard and Moville Community
College staff and students.
The project was encouraged by Greencastle Coast
Guard area officer Charlie Cavanagh. “If a campaign
can save even one life, it’s worth it," he said. |
