THERE is some good news for Inishowen after a senior
Donegal County Council source confirmed that ‘every
effort’ is being made to retain the services of the
peninsula's litter warden.
Recent reports suggested that the official’s
contract would not be renewed, leaving Inishowen as
the only electoral area without a litter warden
service, but the latest development now looks set to
earn the warden an eleventh-hour reprieve.
Reacting to the reports, a county council official
told the Inishowen Independent that the litter post
was an extremely important one.
“The council is committed to continuing to provide a
litter service for the Inishowen electoral area,” he
said.
News of a threat to the litter job was made public
at the recent Buncrana Town Council meeting when
Mayor Padraig MacLochlainn read a letter from the
local Tidy Towns group expressing its concern that
the warden’s contract would not be renewed.
The warden, on a temporary contract due to expire
shortly, has been described as an ‘outstanding’
member of staff at Donegal County Council. He
introduced a highly successful CCTV project in an
effort to catch illegal dumpers across the
peninsula.
Cllr Nicholas Crossan said ending the service would
‘discriminate’ against Inishowen while Donegal North
East election candidate, Cllr MacLochlainn,
suggested that the town councillors dictate a letter
to the Department making a strong case to retain the
local warden. |
