Litter warden made permanent

THERE is some good news for the peninsula after a
senior Donegal County Council source confirmed that
Inishowen’s litter warden has been made permanent.
The post was previously under threat, sparking an
outcry from local politicians and community groups
last February. In March, the warden earned an
eleventh hour reprieve and a three-month contract
extension.
Labour councillor Martin Farren warmly welcomed the
council move.
“I am absolutely delighted that the warden’s vital
role has been retained. I have a very close working
relationship with Pearse [McGrory] and he works
extremely hard across all of Inishowen. He is a very
valuable asset and all the councillors have worked
away behind the scenes to make sure that he was kept
on,” he said. |
Culdaff Fine Gael
councillor Bernard McGuinness was similarly upbeat
about the appointment.
“I am delighted that he has been reappointed and I
would like to thank the County Manager and all his
staff for assisting in that. It is very important
that Inishowen has a full-time litter warden in
place,” he said.
“There is still a lot of unauthorised dumping and
littering across the peninsula. We need the litter
warden to help with resolving that problem,” Cllr
McGuinness added.
The warden, who criss-crosses the peninsula in a
van, has implemented a CCTV scheme to crackdown on
illegal dumping here. |

He also works closely
with local Tidy Towns groups to keep the peninsula
looking its best. |
