MICHELLE Doherty is looking forward to a relaxing
visit home to Glengad this weekend after a ‘mental
couple of weeks’ in which she was voted the top
music mogul in Dublin and Ireland’s best radio DJ
before sporting orange hot pants for a cameo role in
RTE comedy Trivia.
The voice of Dublin radio station Phantom FM,
Doherty topped a Dubliner magazine poll ranking the
most important figures in the music scene; pipping
the likes of Niall Stokes and Paul McGuinness to the
honour.
“It was really cool for me to come out on top, I had
no idea I had won the honour until I saw the
magazine in the shops. I’m really delighted with
it,” she said.
For the second successive year the former Carndonagh
Community School student was also named Best Radio
DJ by the readers of Ireland’s biggest music
magazine, Hot Press. |
“That award is really
special to me because it’s voted for by the public
and the public don’t lie!” Doherty joked.
Not one to rest on her laurels, Doherty, a former
model, also secured a cameo slot in the popular RTE
comedy series, Trivia last month. One of the stars
of the programme, Keith McErleane, hails from Carn.
“I went to Carndonagh Community School with Keith so

forward or what but I
went along to casting to do a read-through and I got
the part. It was great experience for me and it’s
brilliant to do something different from radio for a
wee change,” she said.
After another successful run hosting RTE late night
niche music programme, Under Ether, Doherty is
hoping to be back on our screens for a third series
later this year.
“I’m not sure yet if there will be another run of
shows but I am hopeful that there will be. People
who watched it have been very positive towards me
and that makes it all worthwhile,” she said.
The biggest name in an all-female lineup at Phantom,
Doherty is not concerning herself with reports that
the station is in dire financial trouble.
“I just go in and do my job as best I can. That’s
all I can do.”
Home for her niece, Shannan’s second birthday this
weekend, Doherty relishes her trips back to
Inishowen.
“I try to make it up every three weeks. I haven’t
been up for ages this time because I’ve been so
busy. I’m having withdrawal symptoms. It is great to
escape all the madness and get back home though,”
the Inishowen stunner added. |
