Report: Inishowen Independent
PENALTY points have
been issued to more than one NowDoc driver in
Donegal since mobile speed cameras were introduced
in the county in 2009. Prior to the introduction of
the cameras, local gardaí did not issue penalty
points to NowDoc vehicles responding to emergencies.
The revelation comes after the Inishowen Independent
last week reported that a NowDoc driver in Carn was
hit with two penalty points and fined €80 for
driving at 72kph in a 60 zone while answering an
emergency call to Clonmany.
Following an intervention by Inishowen TD, Pádraig
MacLochlainn with Minister for Transport, Leo
Varadkar, the driver in question may now have those
penalty points rescinded.
“NowDoc drivers respond to emergency calls in a very
natural way and try to get to the scene as quickly
as possible,” a source familiar with the service
said.
“But the Inishowen public need to realise that
because NowDoc vehicles aren’t designated as
emergency vehicles, drivers must observe the speed
limits and that will mean delays in treatment
arriving.” |
