A MAN is still in Garda
custody yesterday being questioned in relation to an
armed robbery at St Johnston Post Office.
The incident happened on Tuesday when a man carrying
a suspected firearm entered the premises about
9.30am.
The quick-as-a-flash raid happened in the space of
18 seconds with the suspect fleeing the building
with a small amount of cash. No shots were fired and
nobody was injured in the incident.
The suspect left the scene in a car driven by a
second man. A Garda hunt including checkpoints were
immediately set up and a man was arrested in the
Bridgend area a short time later.
The robbery in St Johnston is the third post office
raid in as many weeks, following one in Bridgend and
one in Manorcunningham.
Garda Inspector David Kelly urged post office
workers and all cashiers to be vigilant.
"We would recommend that all businesses adopt
sensible procedures in relation to cash-handling. We
would urge them to have a minimum amount of cash on
the premises, empty tills regularly and keep floats
to a minimum," said Inspector Kelly.
"We would also urge people to ensure their CCTV
cameras are working and to report anything
suspicious, no matter how small or insignificant
they view it to be, to the local Gardai. Meanwhile,
the man arrested on Tuesday in relation to the St
Johnston PO raid was being held under the Offences
Against the State Act at Letterkenny Garda Station.
His period of detention was extended by another
24-hours yesterday. The man is in his mid-20s and
has an address in the Letterkenny area. |
