RNLI honours for two Inishowen
volunteers

TWO Inishowen RNLI
volunteers have been honoured by the marine
life-saving organisation.
Denis Cavanagh from Greencastle-Moville branch
received a silver badge at the charity's annual
awards. He has been chairman of the branch for over
20 years and also acts as box secretary. He helps
out where needed at many of the branch's fundraising
events. "He is always willing to go the extra mile
and gives of his time and energy freely," said the
organisation. Joe Doherty from Lough Swilly RNLI
received an engraved statuette. "Joe served for many
years as lifeboat treasurer and is well known and
respected locally. He provides support to the
station whenever it is required." |

The annual RNLI Ireland
awards were held this year at the Royal Hospital
Kilmainham in Dublin, with volunteers and supporters
being recognised for their role in raising funds and
awareness for the charity that saves lives at sea.
Guest of honour for the ceremony was well-known
businessman and Dragon’s Den panellist Bobby Kerr
who presented the local men with their awards. |

On the day awards were
handed out to forty volunteers from all over Ireland
who have given years of service to the RNLI. The
ceremony is held annually to recognise their
commitment and to thank them for their tireless work
and dedication to the charity. Three supporter
awards were given out to people and organisations
who although are not directly involved with the RNLI,
have made a contribution to the work of the charity,
either by raising funds or awareness. These were the
Royal Cork Yacht Club, the Passage East Car Ferry
and to a couple from Connemara who over the last ten
years have raised in excess of €50,000 through
raffling hampers.
RNLI Irish Council chairman John Coyle said: “This
ceremony is about giving thanks - recognising and
celebrating the contribution that our lifesavers,
fundraisers and supporters make to our cause. I
would like to acknowledge our appreciation to all
those who give their time to the RNLI, whether they
bravely carry out the rescues themselves or provide
vital support to our lifesavers.” |
