Sheep rustling gang strike again

GARDAI are hunting a criminal gang of sheep rustlers
thought to be responsible for the theft of hundreds
of animals across Inishowen in recent weeks.
In the latest attack 15 carefully selected Suffolk
sheep, worth an estimated value of €3,000, were
stolen under cover of darkness from a farm in Fahan.
At least four other local farms have also been
targeted, including two in the Desertegney area
outside Buncrana where more than 40 valuable ewe
lambs, including rare hoggets, were taken during a
sophisticated operation last month.
Farmers have been warned to remain extra vigilant
with members of the criminal ring, thought to
contain six or seven men, still on the look-out for
easy targets. |

One local farming
source said he is certain the gang is being aided by
local knowledge.
“These men know exactly what they are doing. They
are targeting only the most valuable animals across
Inishowen. There is no doubt that some locals are
involved. They are not strangers because they know
the lie of the country here,” he said.
It is understood the gang is breeding the stolen
animals on land across the border before switching
Inishowen tags with their own and selling the
animals on for huge profit.
IFA regional development officer Davy Keith said
local farmers should stick together and report any
suspicious behaviour.
“Community awareness of these incidents needs to be
increased and farmers must ensure that they watch
each other's backs by reporting anything peculiar
they may witness,” he said.
“Farmers should note down the number plates of any
strange vehicles hanging around especially those
with trailers. This is a very serious issue
countywide but Inishowen is certainly worst hit this
