Inishowen shoebox appeal underway
15.11.11
With Christmas just
around the corner, the generosity of the people of
Inishowen will be demonstrated once again as the
annual shoebox appeal kicks into high gear.
Last year, generous Inishowen schoolchildren,
churches, community groups and individuals brought
smiles of joy to children in Eastern Europe with
1,950 shoeboxes packed with simple Christmas gifts.
Local co-ordinator Andrew Garvey-Williams travelled
to the Ukraine to deliver the boxes.
He said: “Now I’ve seen with my own eyes what an
amazing impact the shoeboxes can have on the lives
of children who have so little. |

“I wish everyone could
have seen the beaming smiles on the faces of orphans
in Odessa when we handed out the boxes on Christmas
morning. I know all the hard work is worth it just
to bring a bit of sunshine.”
Irish charity Team Hope organises the simple appeal
and locally Andrew and Ruth Garvey-Williams
co-ordinate the project along with a whole team of
volunteers including Buncrana town councillor, Joe
Doherty.
Ruth Garvey-Williams said: “This has been a tough
year for many of us in Inishowen.
“But seeing the photos and hearing the stories from
the Ukraine, I know we are still far, far better off
than the children who receive our gifts."
Volunteers are urgently needed from Monday to Friday
(any time between 10.30 and 5pm) to help check, seal
and pack up all the boxes from Inishowen in line
with customs regulations. If you would like to help
or have any further questions please call Andrew on
