Moville let it slip 21.05.11
Junior A Football Championship. Preliminary Round, first leg

Moville...2-7

Naomh Ultan...1-11

by Damian Dowds at Carrick Field

MOVILLE were defeated by 14-man Naomh Ultan in the preliminary round of the Junior A Championship on Saturday night. Leading by 2-2 to 0-1 after 20 minutes, and by five points at half time, Moville were in command for most of the game but contrived to lose it.
Trailing by three points with ten minutes remaining, Naomh Ultan’s Declan Murrin was sent off and, as is so often the case, the 14 men lifted their game. They outscored Moville by 1-2 to 0-1 after Murrin saw red, with substitute Colin McNicholas scoring the match winner in the 60th minute. Moville did mount two late attacks, but couldn’t get the equaliser and it’s Naomh Ultan who take the advantage into the second leg.
Playing down the slope and with the aid of the wind, Moville, Junior Champions in 2009, blitzed Naomh Ultan in the opening quarter. Sean O’Hare pointed early on before Graeme Doherty goaled in the seventh minute after Paul White had dispossessed Paul Byrne.
Aidan Duddy opened Naomh Ultan’s account with a fine effort in the tenth minute, but it was all Moville early on.
Graeme Doherty pointed after a collecting a pinpoint pass from Eunan Hegarty and substitute Malachy McDermott put his side 2-2 to 0-1 ahead in the 20th minute when his point attempt from 40 yards dropped short and was deflected to the net by a defender.
Naomh Ultan were rocked, but they stuck to their task and only two magnificent point blank saves from keeper Seamus Bovaird prevented first Alistair Rodgers and then Aidan Duddy from finding the net.
The visitors hit three frees, two close range efforts from Cian Kennedy on either side of one from Dermot Gallier, in the last five minutes of the half, with sub Conor McLaughlin responding with one for the home side.
Trailing by 2-3 to 0-4 at the break, Naomh Ultan opened the second half scoring when their target man Aidan Duddy hung one up in the air for the breeze to carry over the bar.
Malachy McDermott responded with a 40m free into the wind, but three unanswered points – from Alistair Rodgers, Dermot Gallier and Aidan Duddy – brought Naomh Ultan to within two points of the home team.
Danny Murphy and Malachy McDermott combined for the latter to edge Moville further in front in the 44th minute, but Gallier hit back for the visitors soon after to keep the margin at two points.
Danny Murphy drew a 50th free minute free that was brought forward for dissent and Sean O’Hare had the simple job of tapping over from 20 metres.
Referee Sean McLaughlin issued a second yellow card to Declan Murrin in the 51st minute and O’Hare converted another free that was brought forward as Moville led by four, 2-7 to 0-9.
But with the hard work done, Moville let victory slip from their grip and allowed Naomh Ultan to steal a win.
Cian Kennedy’s 56th minute goal after a pass over the top of the Moville defence gave the visitors a tremendous lift. There was an element of good fortune about the equaliser when it came; Donal Murrin’s 50 yard kick was allowed to bounce over the bar, and sub Colin McNicholas followed up with the winning point as the clock reached 60 minutes.
Moville threw everything into attack, but couldn’t find an equaliser and they now face the difficult task of winning the second leg in Dunkineely in a couple of weeks time if they’re to keep their championship hopes alive.
