Glengad in seventh heaven

Glengad United...2 Paul McDermott 1; Patrick McDermott 81 Dunree FC...2 McGuinness 49; Baldrick 78 AET, Glengad win 4-1 on penalties GLENGAD United won the first senior cup in the club’s history at a rain-soaked Maginn Park on Saturday evening when they beat Dunree 4-1 on penalties after the sides had had been tied at 2-2 at full time and after 20 minutes of extra time. First Division Dunree, Fr O’Gara Cup winners a week earlier, pushed their Premier Division opponents all the way. They came back from 1-0 down to take a deserved 2-1 lead late on, but Glengad responded almost immediately with Patrick McDermott’s equaliser sending the game to extra time. The best chance to steal an extra time winner fell to Dunree when their star man Philip McGuinness pounced on a short back pass, but his shot tailed to the left of Seamus Houghton’s right post. Glengad had a decent chance in the second period of extra time when Seamus Doherty’s wickedly driven cross was spilled by Dunree stopper Paul Gettigan but Michael Glynn cleared off the line and the outcome was to be decided on penalties – tough on the players involved, but compelling for spectators. Glengad has prepared for a penalty shoot out at training during the week, and they looked confident from the moment Patrick McDermott converted their first penalty and Seamus Houghton saved Derek Murphy’s spot kick. Shane Doherty put Glengad 2-0 ahead and the game was almost up for Dunree when Philip McGuinness blasted his penalty over the bar. John Gerard McLaughlin slotted his spot kick confidently to the bottom left corner to maintain Glengad’s unblemished record, and Liam Baldrick gave Dunree a faint glimmer of hope when he drove his penalty down the middle and past Houghton. |

Leading 3-1, Glengad would
have at least two chances to net the winner, but they
needed only one – substitute Seamus Doherty slamming
down the middle past Paul Gettigan to spark off wild
celebrations on the field and in the stand. A night that ended in success for Glengad had got off to the best possible start when they caught underdogs Dunree cold from the kick off. Kevin Colgan failed to deal with a cross from the right and Terence Doherty turned the ball back into the path of Paul McDermott who finished low to the bottom left corner of the net. Dunree might have got back on terms on ten minutes when Brendan McDaid hit the crossbar after picking up a McGuinness pass. Glengad, though, had the better of the first half chances with Paul McDermott drawing two fine saves off Gettigan in the 25th and 29th minutes, and they went into the half time break leading 1-0. Dunree got back on terms within four minutes of the restart in somewhat bizarre circumstances. Glengad conceded an innocuous looking free kick near the touchline close to the stand. Philip McGuinness sent the ball into the box, where Kevin Colgan threw a boot at it but failed to connect and somehow the ball eluded everyone, including keeper Seamus Houghton, and ended up nestled in the bottom left corner. Encouraged by their equaliser, Dunree took the game to their Premier Division opponents and really got on top as Glengad retreated into their shell. Baldrick and McGuinness combined to set up McDaid but his 69th minute shot skimmed over the bar. And McDaid played a telling role as Dunree took the lead ten minutes later. He dispossessed Jason Doherty and found busy midfielder Thomas Mulhern who squared the ball for Liam Baldrick to beat Houghton and give Dunree a 2-1 lead. Dunree switched to 4-5-1 to try and protect their lead, but Glengad hit back almost immediately. Substitute Seamus Doherty, whose pace and close control troubled Dunree down the left flank, got to the by-line and whipped in a vicious cross that Patrick McDermott needed only to touch to direct it into the net from inside the box. And with that, a game that had seemed to be slipping away from Glengad suddenly swung their way and Dunree were on the back foot for the last ten minutes of normal time. Terence Doherty had two late chances to grab a winner. The first on 88 minutes when he nodded Charlie Byrne’s ball over the top goalward, but Gettigan got back to claim it comfortably. Doherty might have had a penalty on 89 minutes when he raced onto a ball into the channel from the excellent Stephen McDermott, who had tormented the Dunree rearguard all night. Doherty went down in the area under a challenge from the keeper, but whereas Manchester United’s Hernandez had won a penalty against Blackburn at Old Trafford in similar circumstances, Doherty wasn’t just as fortunate. Dunree were hanging on for dear life and both John Gerard McLaughlin with a header and Seamus Doherty with a rasping shot from the left tested Gettigan, but he kept them out to send the game to extra time.
