A team from the Lough Swilly Yacht Club will this week sail for Ireland in a competition against Wales due to be held as part of the Volvo Dún Laoghaire Regatta.
The team consisting of Stephen Doherty, John Hasson, Richie Fearon and James Sammon will take part in a series of races against Wales beginning this Thursday and finishing on Sunday.
The Dun Laoghaire Regatta attracts more than 400 boats and is one of the most prestigious sailing events in the country. More than 2,000 competing crew will be afloat each day, in addition to the army of volunteer organisers and race management teams.
Speaking before this week’s competition Fahan teenager Stephen Doherty said: “We are taking part in the Irish Sea Cup which is held as part of the popular regatta.
Lough Swilly Yacht Club members prepare for the Irish Sea Cup competition.
We are really looking forward to it and it should be four days of good racing.
“In all there are ten races and it is the best of ten and there will be four boats representing Ireland and four representing Wales.”
He added: “We were selected due to our performance at the Inter Counties Championship at the Grand Canal Dock in Dublin last week.
“We had a great race and were leading coming into the last lap.
“Unfortunately Lady Luck did not smile on us and we got caught in a wind hole and while we were there other boats passed us and so we came in fourth out of 19 boats.
“However, we must have impressed enough for people to feel we would be good enough to represent Ireland this week.”
Stephen said he is looking forward to the competition and hoping that he and his colleagues acquit themselves well in the competition against Wales.
Teams from Ireland and Wales have competed for the Irish Sea Cup for some years now and this year’s competition promises to be an exciting affair for sailing enthusiasts.
