Liz secures top trad seminar

BUNCRANA musician Liz
Doherty has been instrumental in bringing a top trad
music conference to the North West.
Fiddle player Liz is a lecturer in traditional music
at the University of Ulster, Magee Campus in Derry.
She will welcome a number of music academics and
performers to the college this weekend for the
three-day annual conference of the International
Council of Traditional Music (Ireland). |

"This is the first time
the event will be held in Northern Ireland. The
occasion will see the presentation of over 20
scholarly papers from all over Ireland, Europe and
beyond," she explained. There will also be two great
sessions in the city over the weekend.
The seminar will focused on the theme of ‘Listening’
and will include a number of papers, short films and
recordings exploring the "social, psychological,
political and aesthetic significance of using music
in everyday life".
Keynote speaker at the conference will be Thomas
Turino, professor of Musicology and |
Liz Doherty. |
Anthroplology at the
University of Illinois and author of 'Music as
Social Life: the Politics of Participation' (2008).
Also contributing to the event will be Dr Suzel
Reily (Queen’s University, Belfast), and Dr Caroline
Bithell (University of Manchester and chair of
British forum for Ethnomusicology).
The conference will be based at the School of
Creative Arts, Magee campus with registration taking
place on Friday, February 18 at 4pm. The keynote
lecture will be held in the Great Hall, Magee, at
6.30pm on Saturday, February 19.
As part of the weekend's activities, two traditional
music sessions will be held at Tracy’s Bar, William
Street (Friday, February 18 at 10.30pm) and at The
Tower Hotel, Butcher Street (Saturday, February 19,
