Kaleidoscope of colour in Moville 30.08.11

A PLAIN corner of Moville has been transformed with a kaleidoscope of colour as part of a local community art project.
The new psychedelic public mural at Foyle Street is part of an innovative new urban arts project which quite literally allows local teenagers to add a splash of colour to their community.
Internationally renowned Philadelphia-based graffiti artist Ernel Martinez recently hooked up with budding painters from the Moville Family Resource centre and the Playhouse in Derry before tackling a wall between Gillen’s supermarket and the Allied Irish Bank.
Not far from the well-known ‘White Wall’ in Moville, the new wall is a kaleidoscope of gaudy colours, arranged in the style of a stained glass window.
Administrator of Moville Family Resource Centre Rosaleen Smith explained some of the aims of the innovative artistic venture.
“The project will be directed by the participants themselves giving them the opportunity to collaborate with international artists to highlight issues that are important to them and to use graffiti to visualise their ideas,” she said.
Cllr Martin Farren joins graffiti artist Ernel Martinez and local children at Moville's colourful new mural.
Clearly impressed by the town’s brightest and newest piece of public art, local county councillor Martin Farren paid a glowing tribute to the Moville Family Resource Centre and the teenagers involved.
“The centre is a fantastic asset to local children, allowing them to get involved in an exciting venture during their summer holidays. It certainly captures the enthusiasm of everyone involved with a very vivid colour scheme,” he said.
“This is just one of the many vital projects run by the Moville Family Resource Centre. It plays a very important role in our community, providing an excellent service for hundreds of people in the area,” Cllr. Farren added. (Inishowen Independent)
