Spinners open new studio

A GROUP of women in
Inishowen are knitting their talents together with
the launch of a new wool and craft studio in
Clonmany.
They call themselves the 'Yarn Spinners of Inishowen'
and they hope local people will soon get to know
their story.
They have set up their new enterprise in Clonmany's
historic Market House and want to share their skills
and knowledge with the wider community.
One member, Christina Crouch, said many mistakenly
viewed wool craft as an "olde world' activity.
"Wool is such a diverse material. It has wonderful
thermal and waterproof properties, it’s basically
fire-proof and it’s all around us," she said.
"Local farmers have been very generous giving us
bags of wool for the purpose of creating authentic
Donegal wool products. You can watch this process in
action at the wool studio every Monday, Wednesday
and Saturday from 1pm." |
The yarn spinners are
keen to encourage re-skilling in this once important
local industry. They strive to re-establish the use
of local wool but will also provide opportunities to
work with merino, alpaca and other beautiful fibres.
An open invitation has been issued to the public for
the studio’s launch this Saturday, October 15, from
11am. |

Another member, Claire
Gilmour adds: "‘Everyone is invited and in
particular we are interested in hearing from anyone
who has stories to share about Inishowen’s wool
industry whether it be spinning, weaving or
knitting.
"There will be free demos, an opportunity to ‘get
involved’, refreshments, perhaps some singing and
definitely some good old fashioned chat’. |
