"Rug pulled from AssetCo workers"
14.11.12
FIANNA Fáil in
Inishowen has called for "fair treatment" for 30
workers who are being made redundant at an AssetCo
call centre in Buncrana.
Deputy Charlie McConalogue said the job losses had
shocked the community and had come as a major blow
for the local economy.
“This is extremely upsetting news for the 30 staff
and their families, particularly in the lead up to
Christmas,” he said. |
“The treatment of these
workers over the past 24 hours has been simply
unacceptable. They have essentially had the rug
pulled from under them and were given an ultimatum
regarding their redundancy package. It is deeply
unfair that this ultimatum would be issued
unilaterally under an impossible timeframe and with
no effort at consultation with the workers
themselves," he added.
The Gleneely-based TD., welcomed the intervention of
Jobs Minister Richard Bruton who has formally asked
Enterprise Ireland, National Employment Rights
Authority and the Department of Social Protection to
ascertain the rights of the affected workers. |

"These workers must be
given every support possible from State employment
agencies to ensure they get the terms they are
entitled to and to help them find alternative
employment,” Deputy McConalogue added.
Meanwhile, local FF councillor Rena Donaghey met the
workers at the premises on the IDA industrial estate
in Lisfannon this morning.
She said: “The staff have been put in an extremely
difficult position as they struggle to come to terms
with the loss of their jobs. This news comes just
six weeks before Christmas at a time when Donegal
has the highest level of unemployment in the
country. All these people want is fair treatment and
the terms they deserve," she said. |
