A FUNDRAISING community bingo will be held in
Greencastle to help promote suicide awareness and
prevention.
The event is being organised by local Moville
community group, Let’s Talk Drink. The group has put
on suicide first aid courses in Moville in the last
number of years called ASIST. In March 2013 they
will be putting on a follow-up workshop called
Tune-Up for people who have already done the HSE’s
ASIST programme.
"Alcohol in itself is not bad. It can be good for
your health and enjoyable in moderation. It is the
overuse of alcohol and what people choose to do when
they are under the influence of too much alcohol
that concerns us,” said spokesman, David Simpson.
The group's research found that in 2006-2007 alcohol
was a factor in 41% of all cases of deliberate
self-harm and suicide.
The group's slogan is 'Alcohol: Reduce the Abuse'
and as part of this ethos they will provide
alcohol-free cocktails during the bingo session.
There will also be spot prizes and a raffle. The
bingo will take place in Greencastle Community
Centre on Sunday, December 9, at 2.30pm for a 3pm
start.
