Derry yacht completes 40,000-mile
race

THE Derry Clipper yacht
completed its full circumnavigation of the world as
it crossed the finish line in Southampton yesterday
- taking eighth place overall.
Thousands of people turned out to watch the yachts
arrive back having departed from the same port a
year ago.
“51 weeks, one amazing year, and so many fantastic
experiences.” said Derry skipper, Mark Light .
"There are a lot of very proud people in
Derry-Londonderry for a very good reason. We have
all worked tremendously hard to get here and
endured, experienced and enjoyed so many fantastic
moments. The ocean is a great leveller and deserves
huge respect. Our year at sea will live in our
memories forever." |

The Derry boat finished
fourth place in the fifteenth and final race from
Den Helder to Southampton taking the eighth spot
overall with a total of 62 points. The winner was
Gold Coast Australia (151pts) followed by Finland
(103pts) and Singapore (101pts). The order of the
remaining seven boats home was De Lage Landen,
Yorkshire, Western Australia, New York,
Derry-Londonderry, Qingdao and Edinburgh.
Derry Mayor, Cllr Kevin Campbell was in Southampton
to congratulate the local crew. “We are extremely
proud of the crew and their amazing achievement –
they are a credit to the city and are wonderful
ambassadors. They have also worked hard throughout
the year long race to promote the city at each of
the stopovers around the world. Well done to all,"
he said. |
