Carn students examine medical
career
17.09.12
STUDENTS from
Carndonagh Community School were among pupils who
attended an open evening devoted to pursuing
medicine as a career.
The Western Health and Social Care Trust in Derry
hosted the event last week for more than 80 students
from schools in Derry, Tyrone and Donegal.
The students participated in practical workstations
and interacted with senior doctors and consultants
from the Western Trust who work in areas such as
anaesthetics, paediatrics, radiology, general
practice and orthodontics.
More time was given at this event than ever before
for prospective students to have direct access to
working doctors and consultants to discuss their
specialist area. |

Western Trust medical
director Dr Kilgallen said: "For students who are
contemplating a career in medicine, this is a unique
opportunity to speak with doctors who practice in
many different medical and surgical specialties. We
are delighted to open our doors in this way to the
school community. We hope that some of these
students. will be our future medical workforce."
Consultant gastroenterologist and Western Trust
medical sub-dean, Dr William Dickey, gave a talk
about life as a doctor while Dr Inez Cooke, senior
lecturer at Queen’s University and consultant in
obstetrics and gynaecology, made a presentation on
preparing an application, personal statements and
interview skills.
Western Trust chairman, Gerard Guckian, added: “This
is exactly the sort of work that the Trust strives
to be involved in, engaging with and supporting our
local schools, and all those involved should be
commended for their efforts.” |
