Patients urged to look after
themselves
16.04.12
THE HSE is offering
free 'self care' courses to people with long term
illnesses such as multiple sclerosis and depression
aimed at helping patients manage their illnesses
themselves.
As Minister for Health Dr James Reilly announced a
series of new programme for the treatment of chronic
illnesses, the HSE in Donegal has announced 'self
management' courses for people with diabetes,
cardiovascular disease, back pain and other
illnesses. |
"If you have a long
term condition, being in control will result in
greater confidence and better health and well
being," the HSE's Donegal Community Services
Department said in a statement.
"The HSE in Donegal is providing a self management
course for people with long term conditions and
carers of people with long term conditions that
promotes self care. Self care means looking after
yourself and your general health so that you can
manage your life and not just your condition," the
statement continued.
The HSE said previous participants had reported "a
significant, positive impact on their lives" from
implementing skills learned on the course. |

Other patients
encouraged to sign up for the free course are those
with Chron's disease, high blood pressure, back
pain, high cholesterol and asthma. The course is
being offered throughout Co Donegal and is being run
over six weekly 2½ hour sessions.
Meanwhile, Dr Reilly told the annual Irish Medical
Organisation conference at the weekend that new
nationwide programmes for diabetes, cardiac,
respiratory and neurological conditions care would
be rolled out in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
He said the programmes would allow greater
self-management by patients of their own conditions. |
