A YOUNG Inishowen mother says New Year will be extra
special from now on after she gave birth to
Ireland's first baby of 2012.
At just 35 seconds past midnight on New Year’s Day
Muff woman Catriona Mitchell became a mum for the
first time, giving birth to a beautiful baby girl,
Amelie Rose, at Dublin’s Rotunda Hospital.
The daughter of Packie and Rose McConnellogue from
Glackmore, Catriona, who lives and works for the HSE
in the capital, went into Labour at 2am on New
Year’s Eve before eventually giving birth by
emergency cesarean section 22 hours later.
After a long labour Catriona said she wasn’t aware
of the significance of the moment of her baby’s
arrival until some time later. |
“Following the section
while I was lying in theatre I remember hearing the
birth being recorded as 35 seconds after midnight
but I didn’t really think much about it. It was only
later when I got back to the ward that the staff
were saying it could be the first baby born in the
country this year,” she said.
“It will certainly make New Year’s Eve and New
Year’s Day extra special for us every year!”
Catriona added.
Married to Neil, Catriona explained how her new
daughter was named.
“Her second name, Rose, is after my mother while
Amelie is just a name that we really, really liked –
so we both agreed on it,” she said. |

Catriona praised the
staff at the Rotunda Hospital following a
complicated but ultimately successful birth.
“The staff couldn’t have been better. They managed
to keep us really calm and relaxed at the end. They
were really professional and caring,” she added.
Catriona is a former pupil of Scoil Naomh Brid, Muff
and Crana College. After gaining a degree at the
University of Ireland, Galway, she studied for a
Masters at Smurfit Business School.
Wide-eyed baby Amelie Rose becomes the first
grandchild of proud local grandparents Packie and
