THE funeral took place
yesterday in Kilkenny of Patricia Friel, daughter of
acclaimed playwright, Brian Friel. The 55 year old
mother-of-two, better known as Paddy, died on Monday
following an illness. She was buried yesterday in
Foulkstown Cemetery, Kilkenny, after midday requiem
mass in St Fiacre's Church, Loughboy. She is
survived by her children Owen and Chrissie, her
father, mother Anne, sisters Mary, Judy and Sally
and brother David. The late Ms Friel was a former
park superintendent and curator of Kilkenny Castle
employed by the Office of Public Works. She was said
to be a much-loved member of staff and had made a
huge contribution to the castle and other OPW sites
around Kilkenny and neighbouring counties since her
arrival in the region in the 1980s. Among the warm
tributes paid this week to the late Donegal woman
was one posted in the 'Irish Times' online
obituaries pages. Ciarán MacGonigal wrote: "Paddy
was such a lovely warm person and helpful to so many
in the early days of the Castle Gallery in
Kilkenny...she will be greatly missed by her
friends." |
