THE people of Bocan are in for a quite a surprise
this Sunday night when the players of the drama
group take to the stage in the local hall with ‘A
Quare Gunk’.
The side-splitting show, a three-act comedy, is
based on eligible bachelor Willy [Martin McCann] and
his search for a wife. In order to find the perfect
woman, Willy pretends to be dead before staging a
fake wake. The woman who mourns his ‘passing’ the
most will then be chosen as his partner.
Willie’s brother Hughie [Seamus McLaughlin] is not
too impressed with the zany plan, which unfolds with
hilarious consequences for all concerned.
One of the directors, John Paul Houghton, said ‘A
Quare Gunk’ was last staged in Bocan more than two
decades ago. Though he can’t remember it himself he
has been told that it was extremely funny.
“I was talking to people from older generations and
they recall it as one of the funniest plays that was
ever performed in Bocan, so we thought it would be
the perfect choice for us,” he said. |

John Paul revealed that
the cast has been rehearsing since last October. He
said the actors are pretty ‘well-versed’ by this
stage but a bit nervous ahead of opening night.
Two cast members from the original drama 22 years
ago, Majella Gill and Georgina Houghton, will tread
the boards again in the 2012 version.
Two child-acting prodigies will also feature in the
highly anticipated comedy with talented duo Jack
McLaughlin and Danielle Houghton playing the widow’s
son and daughter.
With Danny Collins as co-director, ‘A Quare Gunk’
will also showcase the acting talents of Caroline
McCann, Michelle Houghton, John Collins, Mary Farren,
Brendan McGrenaghan, Genevieve Ruddy and Helen
Farren, who has been drafted in at the eleventh
hour.
John Paul also praised back stage artists, Seamus
O’Connor, Seamus Doherty and Brian Houghton.
‘A Quare Gunk’ opens in the Bocan Hall this Sunday
night, February 5th with two more performances on
February 10th and 12th next week. There are no
tickets printed with a €5 charge on the door. Show
starts at 8pm sharp, doors open at 7.30pm. Come
early to avoid disappointment. |
