Tough tests for Moville, Aileach; Clonmany tipped
All roads lead to Caratra Park this Sunday afternoon
when Culdaff host Carn in an Ulster Junior Cup
quarter-final derby clash (1.30pm).
Two of the peninsula’s most inform teams are vying
for a place in the last four of the prestigious
competition with the visiting Reds starting as
slight favourites.
Premier Division Carn, who have blazed a trail in
reaching the last eight of the FAI Junior Cup, are
hoping to bounce back from last week’s shock home
defeat at the hands of Moville Reserves.
Meanwhile First Division high-flyers Culdaff, who
looks certain to return to top flight football next
month, are hoping to upset the odds against their
opponents, who may have an eye on Ballymun United
the following week.
Culdaff will rely on the goalscoring prowess of
Conor O’Brien while Dermot Diver has been in
excellent form of late.
Dermot Coyle’s Carn team has talent in spades and
with players like Brendan Tabb, Michael Byrne and
Cathal Doherty (Kinnego) they could cause Culdaff
all manner of problems.
Elsewhere both Aileach and Moville Celtic face
tricky away trips to top Donegal League teams in
rearranged last sixteen round ties.
Darren Bredin’s Glencrow men, who won the Ulster
Junior Cup in 2009 and 2010, face an away trip to
Glenea, where two teams with genuine hopes of going
all the way will go head-to-head.
Glenea recently dropped out of the Ulster Senior
League and Moville will need to get the best out of
players like Joe Doherty, PJ Barr, Ritchie
McElhinney and Dermot Harkin to progress to the last
eight.
Brian Bell’s Premier Division leaders Aileach will
feel that they have some unfinished business when
they take on Milford. They felt hard done by when
suffering a narrow defeat in the FAI Junior Cup at
the same venue.
The Lakeside men will need big games from stars
Anthony Doherty, James Gillespie and Brian Treacy to
make it into the quarter-final draw.
Another Inishowen team, Clonmany Shamrocks, will
start as hot favourites to reach the semi-final of
the Ulster Junior Cup when they take on Monaghan
outfit, Drumkill Rovers.
Shaun Devlin’s team hasn’t hit the heights of last
year but with players of the calibre of Jason Devlin
and Steven Harkin they should be more than a match
for their Farney opponents.
Meanwhile in the Inishowen League Premier Division
there is a crucial relegation battle when Cockhill
host QPS while Greencastle and Redcastle also meet
in a vital six pointer at Ballybrack.
In the First Division Illies will look to close the
gap on the leaders Culdaff when they host Gleneely
while Buncrana will look to get back on track
against Carrowmena. John L. Coyle’s Moville Reserves
players, fresh from a fine win in Carn, entertain
Rashenny at Glencrow. |
