Have a 'whale' of a time this
Sunday
15.08.12
WHALE Watch Day will be
celebrated at Malin Head this Sunday with everyone
invited to take part.
Join the local branch of the Irish Whale and Dolphin
Group (IWDG) to discover what types of whales and
dolphins inhabit our seas. Co-ordinator Emmett
Johnston said whale watchers would be shown how to
observe and record the massive mammals from land.
The purpose of Whale Watch Day is to raise awareness
about the 24 species of cetaceans - porpoises,
dolphins and whales - that have been recorded around
the Irish coast in recent times. It will also
provide the IWDG with a unique snapshot of whale and
dolphin activity.
This is an annual Heritage Week event with 17
separate headlands around the Irish coast being
observed this weekend by the Irish Whale and Dolphin
Group in association with Inis Cologne. They are
free and open to all. |

Emmett said the species
most likely to be seen from Malin Tower this Sunday
are minke whale, bottlenose dolphin, porpoise and
the basking shark.
“Fingers crossed we get calm conditions, as we have
been experiencing a good level of dolphin and shark
activity in the vicinity of Malin Head in recent
weeks,” he added.
People are urged to bring binoculars or a spotting
scope and dress appropriately for outdoor
conditions. There are no boat trips involved and
there are no guarantees that whales or dolphins will
be seen during the event. The Malin Head whale watch
will take place from 2pm-5pm. For more infomation,
