Inishowen forges friendships in
new book
04.07.13
'FOOTING' the turf in
'The Parish', farm life on the Isle of Doagh and
salmon fishing on Lough Foyle are among a myriad
local history stories featured in a new book
designed to forge cross-community friendships.
More than 200 people gathered last Thursday in the
North West Regional College’s new theatre to
celebrate the launch of ‘Forging Friendships’ the
third book in the highly successful History Links II
project.
Lesser Spotted Ulster's Joe Mahon officially
launched the book which was written by eight
participating groups from the Inishowen area and
Limavady Borough.
Funded by the International Fund for Ireland (IFI),
the project is a collaboration between the Lifford/Clonleigh
Resource Centre, Donegal Vocational Educational
Committee and the North West Regional College. |

Regional College; Martina Needham, Donegal VEC and
steering group members Stephen McNamee, Kathleen
Bonner, Ronan McConnell, and Bríd Foley. |
More than 100
participants from all backgrounds engaged in the
programme where they explored the history and
culture of their own area and shared their
respective histories before, during and after the
Troubles.
IFI chairman Dr Adrian Johnston said the fund was
'proud' to support the project. He congratulated the
participants who "through sharing both their
personal histories of growing up and the histories
of each of their communities proved that there is
much more common ground to unite our communities
than difference to divide them”.
Project co-ordinator, Stephen McNamee, added: “This
book is different from our previous two as we get
more of a maritime feel which is to be expected from
groups on both banks of Lough Foyle." Information,
stories and recordings are available both in the
book and on the project website
