06.08.13
FIRE crews battled for
seven hours last night to get a blaze at a derelict
seaside hotel under control.
The fire broke out at the former Fort Hotel,
Greencastle, shortly before 10pm on Bank Holiday
Monday night.
Two units of the fire brigade from Moville and
Carndonagh attended the scene assisted later in the
night by a hydraulic platform from Letterkenny. The
fire was eventually brought under control shortly
after 5am. |

former Fort Hotel, Greencastle, in the early hours
of this morning. |
The hotel and
restaurant has lain vacant and in disrepair for many
years. However, it lies adjacent to a large number
of holiday apartments and residential homes.
Donegal acting chief fire officer, Joseph McTaggart,
today confirmed there were no injuries and no
reports that any homes had been under immediate
threat.
A garda forensic team is at the scene today and an
investigation into the blaze is expected to get
underway.
"On the arrival of the brigade, a section of the
ground floor and a section of the first floor were
on fire and the fire was also through the roof of
the building," said Mr McTaggart.
"The fire presented a considerable challenge for our
crews and the building has been extensively damaged
but thankfully there have been no reports of
injury,” he added.
Local Labour councillor Martin Farren praised the
quick response of local fire-fighters and garda
officers to the incident. |
