Donegal people off to Western
Front
02.05.13
A group of Donegal
people will visit the First World War Western Front
this month to study Ireland’s involvement in that
war and the lessons to be learned for building peace
and conflict transformation here today.
The visit is being facilitated through Donegal
County Council ‘Hands of History’ project assisted
by Fort Dunree Military Museum and Inishowen friends
of Messines.
The visit is funded by PEACE III and will be led by
John McCarter and PJ Hallinan of Fort Dunree/Inishowen
Friends of Messines. Those taking part had to apply
outlining what their interest in the project was.
George McGuinness from Greencastle will visit his
uncle John McGuinness’s grave for the first time.
Brian O’Donnell from Letterkenny has a personal
connection to World War I given that his grandfather
Matthew Peoples from St Johnston fought in the Great
War. Eimer Shea of Newtowncunningham has a deep
interest in local history and how this has shaped
how we think and our perceptions. |

travel to the WWI western front this month to study
Irish people's involvement in the Great War. |
Lulu Chesnutt of Kilcar
also has strong personal reasons for participating
in the programme given that her father fought in
World War I and her uncle was killed in the Battle
of Messines Ridge.
"Our focus is to look at the shared experience of
the horror and futility of war, the shared suffering
of ordinary people in the trenches and to seek to
draw out the valuable lessons from that time and
apply them to our own communities today," said Mr
McCarter.
The Hands of History project team are keen to hear
from anyone who would like to become involved in any
future activities including the seminars, study
visits and project conferences. For more information
