Show of support for Greencastle
Post Office
18.09.13
PEOPLE are being urged
to offer a show of support for the continuation of
Greencastle Post Office at a gathering outside the
premises this Friday.
The organisers say the event is not a protest but an
"opportunity to continue to promote our campaign for
future provision of services" at the long-standing
post office.
"Since last Tuesday our cause has seen a great
outpouring of support, from both our own community
and neighbouring communities to messages of support
from Canada, Australia, Germany, Northern Ireland,
Scotland and the US," said one of the campaign's
spokespersons, Gemma Havlin.
Supporters are asked to assemble at Greencastle PO
on September 20 at 3.10pm. |

Meanwhile, Inishowen Fianna Fáil T.D., Charlie
McConalogue, said every effort must be made to save
the seaside post office from closure.
He said he had been in contact with An Post
following revelations that the premises could be
shut down following the sad passing of former
postmaster and community stalwart, Cyril Gormley.
“Greencastle Post Office has been in the Gormley
family for almost a 100 years and it is at the heart
of the local community. It’s insensitive that the
family received a letter within five weeks of Cyril
Gormley’s death notifying them of possible closure.
"I accept that An Post is facing its own
considerable challenges but questions must be
answered as to how this particular decision was
made,” said the FF deputy.
“Closing this post office, which is an integral part
of life in the area, would be a major blow to the
community at a time when they can least afford it.
It would amount to yet another attack on rural
services in a county that has seen more than its
fair share of cuts recently.
“An Post have confirmed to me that they are willing
to meet with a delegation from the community to hear
their views. They have also invited interested
parties to submit their views on the matter no later
than September 27."
Letters can be addressed to Peter Gillespie, Retail
Operations Manager, An Post, Wine Street, Co Sligo.
Alternatively emails can be sent to
