One-year lifeline for Greencastle
Post Office
31.10.13
GREENCASTLE Post Office
has been thrown a lifeline after An Post confirmed
it has given the local outlet a one-year extension.
The news has been welcomed by locals and their
public representatives who said the outlet was vital
for the seaside village.
Fianna Fáil T.D., Charlie McConalogue said closure
would have been a "major blow" to the community.
"The decision to offer an extension to the current
post office, which has been operated faithfully by
the Gormley family for generations, is a testament
to the efforts of the local community who have
fought hard in recent weeks to ensure that the
service is retained in Greencastle.
"An Post met with representatives of the local
community as well as Oireachtas members and local
councillors as part of a concerted campaign for the
post offices retention. The company had also been
contacted by many members of the local community by
email and post expressing their strong views that
the Post Office be retained," said Deputy
McConalogue. |

A large crowd turns out on Friday,
20th September, 2013 to show support for the
continuation of Greencastle Post Office. |
Meanwhile, Labour
councillor Martin Farren added: “I have lobbied
strongly on this issue – earlier in the month I met
with representatives from An Post to express the
concerns and wishes of the community that the post
office in Greencastle must remain open.
“I have also worked closely with Minister Pat
Rabbitte on this issue, and I commend him on his
support for the campaign to keep Greencastle Post
Office open for business.
An Post is set to monitor activity at the office
over the coming year with the intention of reviewing
the position in 12 months' time.
Campaigners are urging people in the community to
use the outlet as much as possible and have urged An
Post to provide extra services there. |
