'Picturing Derry' - major
exhibition opens soon
21.05.13
THE first major
photographic exhibition for Derry's City of Culture
year is opening soon at the iconic City Factory
venue. 'Picturing Derry', which is part of the
flagship BT Portrait of a City project brings
together for the first time some of the most iconic
images of the Troubles in the city.
Legendary French photojournalist Gilles Caron’s
previously unseen body of work during the Battle of
the Bogside in August 1969 forms a major part of the
exhibition. It also includes the work of other
visiting photographers from around the world as well
as images by local news photographers. |

The exhibition also
features the enduring work of local photographers
Willie Carson, Larry Doherty, Eamon Melaugh and
Barney McMonagle.
Photojournalists from around the world covered the
conflict and the work of Gilles Caron and Clive
Limpkin became iconic images.
The project is curated by Inishowen-based Declan
Sheehan.
He said: “This is one of the most anticipated
photographic exhibitions ever to have been held in
this city.
“The photographs of Gilles Caron, in particular,
many of which have never been publicly seen, present
a unique take on what was happening in the Bogside
in that tumultuous time.
“Bringing together the work of these local and
international photographers, artists and communities
in one exhibition for the first time gives a
fascinating insight into the events that made
headlines around the world at that time, but also
the daily life that was going on for the people
here.” The exhibition opens on May 29 and continues
until July 7. |
