Colourful DVD explores Derry's saint and soldier 13.12.13

DERRY'S associations with Columcille are well documented but a new DVD reveals intriguing parallels between the saint and a lesser known figure from the city's rich history - the soldier Sir Henry Docwra.
'The Saint and the Soldier', written and directed by Raymond Craig, was recently launched in the city.

The insightful narrative of each man - though separated by a thousand years of history - reveals and compares the many parallels between their lives and aspirations. The film is beautifully illustrated by images from the stained glass that graces many places of worship thoughout the city.
University of Ulster history lecturer, Dr William Kelly, described the new work as one that "opens a window into the complicated souls of men by revealing the dreadful moral choices inflicted by politics and war on people like St Columcille and Sir Henry Dowcra".
"Trying to reconcile these choices forces us all to come to terms with the complex history of Derry, Doire, or Londonderry."
The DVD's creator Raymond Craig said Columcille and Docwra are regarded by many as "the founding fathers of the City of Derry".
"Even though they are separated by a thousand years they have made valuable contributions to the cultural life of the city," he said.
Raymond said he was delighted with the turnout at the recent launch which included many friends from the Greencastle and Moville areas.
'The Saint and the Soldier' was produced by John Thompson Video Productions in association with Guildhall Press, Creggan Enterprises and The Hive Studios at Rath Mor, Creggan. It is available at Little Acorns Bookstore and other local outlets, priced £9.95.
