A GROUP set up to
remember the 8,000 Donegal people who served in the
First World War have been "inundated" with requests
from victims' relatives.
The County Donegal War Memorial Group said members
of the public across the county are keen to find out
about relations who served in the various Irish
regiments during the 1914 -1918 conflict.
The group aims to erect a permanent war memorial to
all the Donegal men and women who were killed in
action.
Committee secretary Sean McClafferty said: ''It
really is very sad when one considers that out of
the 8,000 plus men and women from across Donegal who
went to war in 1914, over 1200 of them never came
home.
"One Donegal home lost four sons, four homes lost
three sons, 38 homes lost two sons and one home lost
two daughters.
"It really is now time in this the centenary year of
the conflict to give them the honour that they so
richly deserve'."
Mr McClafferty added: "We are very keen to hear from
members of the public who have ideas or suggestions
and indeed from individuals who wish to get involved
and assist us in our ultimate aim.'' For more

Meanwhile, a number of free events across Donegal
are being delivered by Monreagh Heritage Centre to
examine the involvement and personal wartime stories
of those who were involved in World War I.
