Gallagher goes again for Brussels 06.03.14

FIANNA Fáil MEP Pat the Cope Gallagher has confirmed his intention to contest the European elections for the Midlands-North-West constituency, pending nomination at the party’s convention on March 15.
He texted journalists late on Sunday night to say he had decided to seek the party nomination, putting paid to rumours that he might bow out of EU politics.
Mr Gallagher, who turns 66 this week, said he was unfazed by the enormity of the 15-county constituency. The Fianna Fáil stalwart said he was as “focused, enthusiastic and motivated as ever” and determined to provide service to “all corners” of the sprawling constituency.
The Donegal MEP described the upcoming elections as “the most fundamentally important” since the European Parliament was formed in 1979. “The Lisbon Treaty has completely reformed the role of the European Parliament and it is imperative that the forthcoming campaign focuses on how EU legislation affects the everyday lives of all citizens and local communities,” he said.

Mr Gallagher previously won an MEP seat in 1994, 1999 and 2009. He is a member of the Committees on Fisheries and Regional Development. He is also Chair of the delegation with relations to Switzerland, Iceland, Norway and the European Economic Area.
Fianna Fáil is believed to be struggling to find a running mate for Mr Gallagher, with former TDs Donie Cassidy and Sean Power in the mix.
