Have your say on Donegal property tax 11.07.14

DONEGAL County Council is inviting submissions from the public on proposals to vary the basic rate of Local Property Tax in the county in 2015.
The council is keen to hear the views and opinions on any proposal to vary the rate of Local Property Tax and in particular, on the potential effects on households, individuals, businesses and indeed on Council services.
Certain local authorities including Donegal may now vary, up or down, the basic rate of LPT within their own area by a maximum of 15 per cent.
For example, if a house is valued under €100,000, the Local Property Tax in 2014 would have been €90. If the Local Property Tax rate is increased by 15%, this house owner will pay €103.50 in 2015 and if the Local Property Tax rate is reduced by 15%, then this house owner will pay €76.50 in 2015 and so on.
The LPT money collected contributes towards the cost of providing a range of local services including libraries, public lighting, road maintenance, housing services, fire services, dealing with illegal dumping and littering, community initiatives, beach management and tourism development initiatives, the local authority said in a statement.
"An adjustment in the rate of Local Property Tax will have an impact on the council's capacity to deliver these services. For instance, if the rate is reduced and if funding is not available to replace this reduction, then the income available to the council will be reduced which will in turn limit the range and extent of services and supports that can be provided in 2015."
The deadline date for all submissions is August 19, 2014 and submissions should be made in writing and emailed to LPT@donegalcoco.ie or posted to Donegal County Council, LPT Submissions, County House, Lifford, Co. Donegal.
