Malin fell to their 3rd consecutive defeat when
going down by three points in Tir Chonaill Park,
Donegal Town on Sunday. A Karl Lacey goal midway
through the opening half, proved decisive as he
burst through the Inishowen sides defence and fired
past Declan Lafferty for the only three pointer of
the encounter.
Both sides were evenly matched throughout, with the
home side first to settle and Kevin Mc Brearty
raised the first white flag of the afternoon, but
Michael Byrne levelled moments later. Four Masters
regained the lead from a Dillon Ward score, and on
the 18th minute of the game, county star Karl Lacey
found the back of the net to push his side 5 points
in front. Further scores from Ward and Lacey pushed
the Donegal Town side further ahead and when Mc
Brearty notched his second of the afternoon, the
signs were looking ominous for Terence Colhouns
charges. Matthew Byrne fired over to reduce the
deficit and this seemed to spark the visitors into
life, as Malin finished the half in the ascendancy.
Points from Kieran Mc Colgan and an Anthony Kelly
free ensured the game was still in the balance when
the half time whistle sounded leaving the men in
black n amber trailing by 1-5 to 0-4 at the
interval.
Both sides traded scores in the opening minutes of
the half, and when substitute Adam Byrne and Brendan
Mc Laughlin got their names on the score sheet for
the visitors, just 2 points separated the sides.
Michael Doherty (whose father was an ex Malin
player) eased the home sides worries when he got his
first and only score of the game to put 3 between
the sides. Conor Farren edged his side closer in the
closing stages to set up a grand finale. Lacey and
Conor Mc Gonagle points seemed to have secured the
win for the south Donegal side, but just as they had
done in the first half, Malin threw every thing at
their hosts and a brace of points from Anthony
Kelly, left a goal between the sides. A Brendan Mc
Laughlin effort flashed across the goal with just
minutes remaining, as they home side breathed a huge
size of relief. The defeat leaves Malin in joint
second bottom place and sets up a big clash next up,
when Ardara come calling.
