Inishowen GAA helps Childhood Cancer Foundation 02.11.15

BUNCRANA and Naomh Padraig Uisce Chaoin were presented with the silverware at the recent Donegal Animal Hospital-sponsored U9 and U11 finals at The Scarvey in Buncrana.
But the real winners were the Childhood Cancer Foundation who were delighted when local representative Maura Toner was presented with a cheque for €1,320. The money was the proceeds collected on the night via donations and also a specially organised raffle.
Award winners Billy Kelly & Patrick Hirrell, Donncha Roarty & Ciaran Kennedy pictured with Maura Toner, Emer & Bronagh McKinney of CCF and Gerald Roarty.
It was a new initiative by CLG Bord Inis Eoghain which went very smoothly and proved very enjoyable for almost 200 kids, with a total of ten clubs, including St Eunans, Naomh Colmcille, Doire Colmcille and Steelstown Brian Ogs joining six Inishowen clubs to participate in two new tournaments. The tournaments ran concurrently over an eight-week period.
In a gala finals night played under floodlights before a huge crowd, young Billy Kelly had the honour of lifting the cup for the Buncrana boys as they defeated a gallant Steelstown Brian Ogs in a keenly contested U9 final, while Donncha Roarty, captain of the Derry boys deservedly picked up the Man of the Match Award.
The U11 final was another superb game of football, with Naomh Padraig Uisce Chaoin, captained by Patrick Hirrell picking up the silverware as they got the better of the impressive Naomh Colmcille. There was some consolation for the Newtown boys when Ciaran Kennedy picked up the Man of the Match award in this age group.
Childhood Cancer Foundation comprises volunteer parents and family members whose children are currently in treatment for or in remission from various childhood cancers. Through the generosity of our donors and work of our volunteers we are funding play services on St John’s paediatric cancer day unit at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin. The charity is also funding a medical research project in the hospital, which investigates the benefits of complementary therapies for children receiving treatment for cancer.
