29.09.15
CO-OPERATING for Cancer
Care NorthWest, CCC(NW) are to meet Minister for
Health, Leo Varadkar T.D., this Thursday in
Letterkenny to discuss cancer services in the county
and region.
CCC(NW) said its focus for the meeting would be
two-fold.
The group will ask what constructive progress has
been made regarding Saolta's commitment to breast
cancer services at Letterkenny General Hospital
following a meeting in Dublin in August.
"In particular, we look forward to learning of
interim progress being made in developing
sustainable concrete plans of action for extra
consultant support for the breast surgeon in LGH;
improving urgent and non-urgent referral times for
women waiting to attend the breast clinic in LGH and
for a summary on how the centralisation in Galway,
of the breast referral triage system, introduced in
May is progressing," said CCC(NW) spokeswoman Noelle
Duddy. |

"A further meeting to
evaluate and review progress on all the above is
planned for the end of the year in Hawkins House,
Dublin. We will also welcome news on how the
appointments of a consultant urologist and a
consultant general surgeon to LGH are progressing.”
Secondly, the group will enquire about the third
National Cancer Strategy with a view to asking
Minister Varadkar to "consider and hopefully support
the following recommendations aimed at advancing the
development of cancer services in LGH and the North
West region of the island of Ireland".
Ms Duddy outlined the recommendations as the
retention and development of cancer services in
Letterkenny; building on the success of the
joint-funded cross border North West Radiotherapy
Unit at Altnagelvin; continued collaboration to
further develop world class cancer services between
Letterkenny General and Altnagelvin Hospitals and
ultimately providing Donegal and the North West with
a designated cross-border Cancer Centre with
Letterkenny General and Altnagelvin Hospitals for
the 500,000-strong population living in the North
West region. |
