Foyle Sailability ready for
round-Ireland trip
23.06.15
THREE yachts will set
sail from Greencastle this Friday to circumnavigate
Ireland under the Foyle Sailability flag.
The round-Ireland trip will raise awareness about
the availability of sailing for people with
disabilities.
The local skippers and crew will be joined by
another yacht at Carlingford, Co Louth.
Foyle Sailability volunteers decided to take on the
adventure to raise awareness of Sailability Ireland,
a national organisation that aims to increase
opportunities for people with disabilities in
sailing and water-based activities.
The crews will be waved off after a fun-packed Open
Day in Greencastle on Friday including plenty of
activities on and off the water.
The event will culminate with a gig by popular band
The Yetis that evening. |

The round-Ireland
journey will take approximately two weeks, making
stops at Carrickfergus, Carlingford, Dun Laoghaire,
Kinsale, Galway and Killybegs.
Ciaran Murphy of Sailability Ireland said: “We look
forward to welcoming the Foyle Sailability members
to each of the centres around the coast and raising
awareness of the benefits of sailing for people with
disabilities throughout the island of Ireland.”
Foyle Sailability was launched two years ago by a
group of people from throughout the north west cross
border region. The aim is to offer people with
disabilities access to sailing to eradicate
discrimination between persons in the sport of
sailing and in the wider community and to comply
with the principles of equal opportunity.
The round-Ireland event is supported by MalinWaters
which is funded by the EU INTERREG IVA cross border
programme under the Sail West project.
